An A to Z of all things Breast Cancer

Exercise
Noun: exercise; plural noun: exercises
Activity requiring physical effort, carried out to sustain or improve health and fitness.
If you have never had the misfortune to experience The Cancer, and cancer treatment, you will be forgiven for thinking that you will spend the whole time in a semi catatonic state, unable to function at any level. While this is certainly true for some of the time, for a lot of the time you will feel OK. Sometimes you will feel almost ‘normal’.

Now I could never be accused of being any kind of Jessica Ennis-Hill, but as the daughter of an old-school nurse, with the bedside manner of an angry nun (she was from Naples….) I was always taught never to be a malingerer. And as a result, I do believe that getting some blood flowing around your body, and relieving the pressure on your expanding arse, does actually aid recovery a little bit.
On the days when you feel like death, obviously you are not going to be getting up and doing a quick decathlon. But on the days when you feel ok, take the dog out, go for a walk in the park, nip to the shops; anything that requires you getting proper clothes and shoes on. Some people, depending on their pre-The Cancer fitness regime will continue to go out for a run, bike ride etc. I’m not suggesting that now is a good time to take up extreme snow-boarding; but fresh air, sunshine and a bit of an increased pulse can do wonders for the mind and body. Remember, you are not dead yet!
